IAS Ira Singhal suffers from curvature of the spine which is also known as Scoliosis. But she never let her disability become a hindrance in the path of her dreams. He topped the general category of the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2014.


IAS Ira Singhal is considered one of the committed, dedicated and hard-working officers. She was the topper of the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2014. The success of Ira Singhal to the common man would seem a miracle. But his success is not a miracle but the result of his hard work. As the saying goes - God helps those who help themselves! Let us know how was the journey of Ira till becoming an IAS:

It was a dream of becoming an IAS since childhood.

Ira was born in Meerut district of UP. She spent 7-8 years of her childhood in Meerut, after which she shifted to Delhi with her family. She tells that when she used to live in Meerut, there used to be curfew for a long time and she used to hear from people that only DM imposes curfew. Ira was greatly impressed by the power and responsibilities of the DM and she decided that she would grow up to be the DM.

Was Strategy Manager at Cadbury

Ira did her graduation from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) and an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi. He also worked as a manager at the confectionery firm Cadbury India and as a marketing intern at Coca-Cola.

Ira says that she was happy in her job but not satisfied. After working 18-20 hours a day, she definitely earned money, but her hard work did not change anyone's life and she used to remain dissatisfied thinking about this. That is why he decided to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming an IAS.

Rejected even after getting selected in UPSC 3 times

Ira Singhal gave UPSC Civil Services Exam in the year 2010, 2011, and 2013. . In year 2011, his name appeared in the final selection list but he was not allotted any service. In response, IRA filed suit against the Commission, where it was told that IRA's disability was not in any of the disability categories, so their suit was dismissed. She went to the Central Administrative Tribunal after the commission dismissed the case. After long patience, he won his case in 2014 and was selected for IRS service. The decision came ahead of his 2014 mains exam. Ira took these exams considering it as a last attempt.

Top UPSC Civil Services Exam 2014

Ira Singhal topped the general category of UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2014. Ira's father Rajendra Singhal and her mother Anita Singhal were happy and surprised by her success in the 2014 UPSC exam as Ira's dreams were turning into reality. Ira suffers from curvature of the spine, also known as scoliosis, but she never let her disability hinder her path to her dreams. Her disability never stopped her from working towards her goals, Ira worked hard to become an IAS officer. He says that all this happened because of his desire to serve the country.
